A worldwide travel advisory has been issued by the US State Department warning American travellers to exercise increased caution against possible terror attacks.
The alert was issued last night (Thursday) following president Biden’s visit to Israel following the country’s military response against Gaza to the October 7 attack by Hamas which killed more than 1,400 people.
The US State Department notice said: “Due to increased tensions in various locations around the world, the potential for terrorist attacks, demonstrations or violent actions against US citizens and interests, the Department of State advises US citizens overseas to exercise increased caution.”
It recommended that US citizens should “stay alert in locations frequented by tourists” and follow the department on Facebook and Twitter/X.
The US government is organising repatriation charter flights from Tel Aviv on a rolling basis until at least Sunday (October 22) due to the limited number of commercial services from Ben Gurion airport.
The State Department last issued a worldwide advisory in August 2022 after the US military killed al-Qaida leader Ayman al-Zawahiri.
The US also joined the UK Foreign Office in recommending its citizens leave Lebanon.
The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) continues to advise against all but essential travel to Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories, and against all travel to locations Gaza and within 5km of the border with Lebanon.
Meanwhile, flights to Jordan are continuing to operate and the Jordan Tourism Board is reassuring travellers that the country remains a “safe haven” for visitors.
Managing director Dr Abed Al Razzaq Arabiyat said: “We understand that tensions around the world can raise concerns, but we believe in the power of travel to foster understanding and build bridges between nations.
“As always, the Jordan Tourism Board is here to assist and support tourists in making the most of their visit.”
