Viking starts year-round European river cruises

Viking is to start year-round river cruising in Europe with a new winter itinerary.

The 10-day Treasures of the Rhine sailing between Amsterdam and Basel via Cologne, Heidelberg and Strasbourg starts on December 23.

Viking claims the move establishes it as the first line to operate year-round on Europe’s rivers, provided access to landmarks when there are typically fewer crowds.

However, Viva Cruises is already established as a year-round operator on European rivers with wellness, cultural and culinary-themed cruises from January to March.

Prices for the Viking sailings start at £1,595 per person if booked by June 30.

The company is running the itinerary in both directions using identical 190-passenger river ships Viking Alruna and Viking Tialfi.

Viking chairman Torstein Hagen said: “The Middle Rhine is one of our most popular destinations.

“With constantly changing views of hilltop castles, historic towns and terraced vineyards along the steep valley sides, it is a region that will always be best explored by the river.

“Many of our guests have sailed the Rhine during other seasons, so we are pleased to offer a new option for those who may be interested in experiencing Europe during a quieter time of year.”
