Now can operators stop the discounts?

My letter of the week (Travel Weekly January 10) predicted the position that tour operators would be in and the way that the market situation would be in July

We now have a situation where First Choice chief executive Peter Long attacks widespread discounting but still offers preferred tactical offers. Lunn Poly managing director Nigel David has threatened to quit unless the industry ends its price obsession, which Lunn Poly created in the first place.

We have Airtours dictating to us that we have six months to improve sales by removing direct numbers and e-mail addresses or else, and yet the free Airtours Sun newspaper advises clients that Fred Wilson saved pounds on a fantastic seat-only deal and by sorting out his own accommodation, it’s cheaper than a package holiday.

The same issue has Molly always leaving it to the last minute, with her travel agent telling her that Airtours has some stunning late rates this summer, which meant late comers like Molly could expect excellent value for money. Thanks, Richard. With that advice it should be us giving you six months to improve. I don’t think I will be rushing to switch sell from good companies such as Tapestry, Travelscene and other independents.

We want discounting to stop completely, it’s not necessary. A consumer campaign has to be broadcast with a message thatlast-minute discounted holidays should be a thing of the past. Agents are now getting their messages heard and, at last, action is threatened. The ball is in your court, tour operators.
