CAA campaign highlights Web booking perils

THE CIVIL Aviation Authority will launch a campaign this month to alert consumers to the pitfalls of booking travel on the Internet with companies that are not protected by an Air Travel Organiser’s Licence.

The campaign will also aim to raise the public awareness of ATOLs and differentiate the CAA’s role from other trade bodies.

CAA consumer protection group director Helen Simpson said: “Anyone can advertise on the Internet so customers must know they are protected. The initiative will include measures to ensure that the financial protection message is carried into new media areas, such as the Internet. The Web is a fast-growing part of the travel business and there are some public concerns.”

Simpson declined to say whether plans would include prosecuting agencies who failed to display an ATOL.
