Airlines face new guidelines

SCHEDULED airlines will have to improve contractual terms after new recommendations on air passengers’ rights.

Guidelines issued by the International Air Transport Association and the Office of Fair Trading mean airlines have to introduce some key changes.

These include bringing scheduled carriers in-line with charter airlines by issuing credit notes to passengers with non-refundable tickets if they miss flights due to illness or bereavement; guaranteeing that prices are fixed at the time of booking; and ensuring return tickets can no longer be cancelled by airlines if the outward ticket is not used for reasons beyond the client’s control. British Airways has said it will follow the guidelines next month.
