Newcastle records busiest day as passenger numbers hit high

NEWCASTLE Airport recorded its busiest day last month with 14,661 passengers passing through its doors.

The high figures on September 15 were preceded by a 5% increase during August, a total of 357,814 passengers .

August saw a 9% increase on domestic travel, a 3% rise in international scheduled passengers and a 4% increase in holidaymakers on charter flights.

Individual routes have also helped boost passenger numbers with traffic to Aberdeen up 17% on last year’s figures, and a 17% increase in volume on the Newcastle to Belfast route, operated by Gill Airways and British Airways.

The Newcastle to Birmingham route has seen a 32% increase, which the airport said will bode well for British Regional Airlines taking over the route on October 30.

Connections to London also showed steady growth with a 13% rise during August on the Gatwick route and a 5%growth on Heathrow.
