Washington State seeks to uncork wine route potential
Wine is certainly on the menu in Washington State, which is promoting its vast range of varieties in the region. Washington State Tourism trade programme manager Carrie Wilkinson-Tuma said: “Situated on approximately the same latitude as the famous French regions of Bordeaux and Burgundy, Washington State has an ideal climate for growing grapes.
“It has established an international reputation for its diverse collection of fine chardonnays, merlots, cabernets and reislings, and other varieties such as syrah and cabernet franc are new additions that are showing great promise.”
She added: “Visitors have an extensive choice, with more than 150 wineries throughout the state’s four viticulture appellations. We are now trying to interest UK operators in putting together suggested Washington Wine Country self-drive itineraries.”
The wine regions include the Puget Sound and Cascade Mountain foothills, Yakima Valley and the Columbia Valley.
