First Choice hits out over early launches

FIRST Choice has blamed rivals for its decision to launch two winter 2001/02 brochures.

Product director Kyle Haughton said it had been backed into a corner after Thomson and Airtours issued their main programmes.

“We were reluctant to go on sale but with our competitors launching early, we could not afford to be the odd one out,” he said.

In its Winter Sun programme, the operator has added Costa del Almeria and Costa de la Luz to meet growing demand for off-season holidays to Spain.

Both resorts have previously been offered only as summer destinations.

Hurghada and El Quesir in Egypt are also new.

Haughton said the expansion will help offset the anticipated decrease in long-haul sales caused by the increased cost of fuel and strength of the dollar.

Prices start at £155 per person for one-week self-catering in the Costa del Sol.

To appeal to upmarket customers, First Choice has also added a Premier Choice selection of 11 hotels.

In its Leisurely Days programme, bowling clubs at two hotels in the Costa de Sol and Tunisia have been added.
