GETTING THERE: Malev flies from Heathrow and Gatwick to Budapest; British Airways serves Budapest from Heathrow.
CLIMATE: warm, dry summers and cold winters. WHEN TO GO: summer for Lake Balaton, Transdanubia, the north and the Great Plain; year round for a Budapest city break.
ACCOMMODATION: Budapest has a good hotel selection up to five-star; other cities have mainly three and four-star properties. Guest-house accommodation is on the increase.
