* co-op travel growth
Co-op Travel plans to open four new travel agencies in the Midlands at a cost of £2.5 million. Parent company West MidlandsCo-operative Society is creating 44 new jobs at its new stores as part of a larger plan across its various divisions.
* de vere job losses
Hotel group De Vere is shedding around 40 jobs, including management posts, following a drop in demand for corporate and conference facilities. Last month the hotel chain was hit by the postponement of the Ryder Cup which was due to be held at the De Vere Belfry. This is expected to cost the hotel group around £700,000.
* butlins appointment
Butlins has appointed Marc Jones to the position of sales and marketing director. Jones, previously Warner Holidays sales and marketing director, replaces Ken Johnston, who left the company in June.
* baa losses
BAA’s profits could fall by 20% this financial year after overall traffic for September through its airports fell 6% on the same month last year. A trading statement will be issued on October 29.
* cash rescue for anz
Air New Zealand became state-owned once again last Thursday when the New Zealand government came to its rescue with a £230 million investment package. The move will see Singapore Airlines reduce its 25% share to less than 10%. ANZ is keen to revive Ansett as a low-cost carrier.
* malaysia change
Malaysia Airlines will drop its Manchester to Kuala Lumpur service from next February as part of a network restructure.
