VIRGIN CREATES 300 NEW JOBS

Report by Louise Longman

VIRGIN Atlantic is looking to recruit 300 staff following an increase in services and the arrival of its larger aircraft this summer.

The recruitment drive, the airline’s first since restructuring after September 11, will see staff who took unpaid leave last year contacted first, with UK-based reservations staff, cabin crew and airport staff the airline’s priority.

The airline cut 1,200 jobs following the terrorist attacks in the US and grounded five Boeing 747 aircraft. It currently employs 6,800 staff worldwide.

Popular services, which have been increased, include Orlando, Lagos, Shanghai and New York. This summer also sees the arrival of Virgin’s A340-600 aircraft.

Chairman Sir Richard Branson said: “The recruitment drive is an endorsement of our decisive action last September. We need to maintain our control of costs and grow revenues in all cabins but we are looking to the future with rising optimism.”

Advertising for vacant positions will start from this month.
