A PROPOSAL to expand Heathrow by adding a sixth terminal and
building a third runway will be published by BAA today.
The airport’s owner wants to spend £700 million in the next
10 years so that the UK hub can handle up to 116 million passengers
in 2030.
Last year it handled 67 million passengers, but BAA Heathrow
chief executive Mick Temple thinks major modernisation is needed if
the airport is to compete for traffic against its better-equipped
European rivals.
“We cannot afford to stand still,” he said.
Up to 700 neighbouring houses will need to be demolished if the
plan goes ahead. However, details of a compensation scheme for
affected home owners will be published soon, according to
Temple.
The draft expansion plan is open for consultation until the end
of October.
