Sharm price war looms

Operators are keeping an uneasy eye on Sharm el-Sheikh as fears grow of a price war for the peak winter season.

Egypt specialist Longwood Holidays managing director Rafi Caplin said operators could be left with empty hotel rooms because of anxious tourists bypassing the resort and fears hoteliers will have to slash prices to stimulate demand.

He said: “There has been an overkill in Sharm el-Sheikh with a lot of the major operators moving their European capacity into the region. There will be pressure on hoteliers to reduce prices to sell the capacity and that will filter down to us [specialists].”

However, Libra Holidays MD Akis Kyprianou is confident the resort will recover, despite half of its customers due to travel last weekend cancelling. A total of 45,000 Libra customers visit Sharm annually.

Head of legal Joanna Kolatesis added: “I don’t think a price war will be triggered but there might be a consolidation of flights.”

Jewel in the Crown sales director Paul Cowley said the operator dropped one of its five weekly flights as families continued to cancel holidays with no penalty. He said operators would only know in September if prices had to be cut.
