VisitDenmark and Sterling Airlines push Jutland region

Aalborg's Jomfru Ane Gade district is famous for its culture and nightlife

VISITDENMARK has launched a £150,000 campaign to support Sterling Airlines’ new six-times-weekly service from Gatwick to Aalborg.

The project, in conjunction with Sterling and Northern Jutland, is aimed at raising awareness of the region, which until now has not had any direct access from the UK.

VisitDenmark UK director Henrik Kahn said: “We have not been able to market Aalborg before as there was no access. We are promoting it as a city-break destination, but also as an option for older couples who are into culture.”

He said Aalborg is a lively city and home to Jomfru Ane Gade, a strip of restaurants, bars and clubs that will attract younger people, but also has an art museum, opera and jazz festivals, Viking re-enactments and big-name concerts in the convention centre.

Kahn said VisitDenmark’s Cottage Tourism campaign is being widened next year to cover camping and holiday centres, and the Øresund Project, a joint initiative with Sweden that promotes both Malmö in Sweden as well as Copenhagen.

The two cities are connected by a road and rail bridge, opened in 1999. Following a cash injection from all the partners in the projects, the wider counties on all sides of the bridge will also be promoted.

Kahn said: “It was a two-year project but it has gone so well that we have all put in more money so we can build on it. Our message is if you go to Copenhagen, take a day trip to Malmö, and vice-versa.”

Sterling Airlines’ new flights from Gatwick to Aalborg cost from £26 one-way.
