Half of Brits prefer Christmas in the sun – 19 Dec 2006

Nearly half of families would like to escape the British weather and head for the sun over the Christmas period, according to a survey by travel website takethefamily.com.

The survey found that 48% of parents questioned said they would rather spend Christmas day lying on a beach than sitting on the sofa.

However, the traditional Christmas at home was more popular than a family ski trip. A third of respondents said they would like to be at home scoffing turkey, compared to 19% who said they’d like to be on the ski slopes.

Meanwhile, with less than a week to go until Christmas Day, thousands of people are packing their bags ready to head off from East Midlands Airport for the festive period.

The airport expects more than 160,000 people to be travelling in and out of the Castle Donington-based airport between Wednesday December 20 2006 and Saturday January 6 2007. The busiest days will be on Thursday 21 December and Friday 22 December, according to airport figures. On Christmas Day there will be five arrivals and five departures to Sharm el-Sheikh, Las Palmas, Funchal and Lanzarote.
