Fog causes large-scale flight cancellations – 21 Dec 2006

British Airways has cancelled all domestic flights into and out of Heathrow and many services to Paris and Brussels for a second day as dense fog continues to restrict traffic at the airport.

Air traffic control body NATS has cut the number of permitted take offs and landings by half, leading to 350 flight cancellations today.

BA responded yesterday by cancelling 200 flights to destinations served by alternative forms of transport in order to allow other services to continue. No long-haul flights have been cancelled so far, although departures are subject to delay.

BMI also cancelled 22 flights yesterday and Lufthansa and Alitalia services were affected. There were 18 cancellations at Gatwick yesterday and BA warned of delays at the airport today.

Airport operator BAA said the situation was likely to become worse before it gets better.

Elsewhere, flights scheduled from Coventry today have been cancelled, with passengers likely to be transferred to Birmingham airport. There are a number of cancellations at Manchester. Yesterday, Liverpool’s John Lennon airport was also affected.

Passengers bound for Heathrow on BA domestic services today and tomorrow should check with the airline but should expect cancellations and make alternative arrangements.

The fog is expected to continue into Friday and BA is asking passengers on affected services not travel to Heathrow. They should call 0800 727 800.
