Gordon Brown criticised for Air Passenger Duty chaos – 1 Feb 2007

Chancellor Gordon Brown has had his knuckles rapped over the rise in Air Passenger Duty.

The Treasury select committee, a cross-party group of MPs, has criticised the Chancellor for introducing the rise at such short notice that it requires retrospective payments.

In its pre-budget report the committee criticised “the unusual timing of the increases in APD”.

Federation of Tour Operators director-general Andy Cooper said: “Select committees are toothless tigers, but it is helpful the committee has taken the same view as us.”

ABTA head of policy and communications David Marshall said: “It adds to pressure on the Treasury.”
