Go wins EasyJet battle for Swiss flight launch

GOhas beaten off a challenge from EasyJet which tried to stop the British Airways carrier launching services from Stansted to Switzerland.

In an objection to the Civil Aviation Authority, EasyJet complained that Go’s application to start double-daily flights to Zurich and a daily service to Geneva would seriously harm its own Swiss flights.

However, the CAA rejected EasyJet’s submission.

In its summing up, the CAA said: “EasyJet submitted no figures in support of these assertions, either in respect of the current performance of its own services or of the likely effect of Go’s entry on its future performance on these routes.

“There was no evidence on the basis of which the Authority could conclude that Go’s entry constituted anti-competitive behaviour.”

Go is free to start the Zurich service on December 15 and the Geneva service later this winter. The fare to Zurich will lead-in at £80 return.

From Luton, EasyJet already serves Geneva with four daily flights and Zurich with three daily services. It plans to start daily Geneva flights from Gatwick and Stansted – and compete with Go for the first time – from mid-December. EasyJet is also building up a hub at Geneva following the purchase of a stake in the carrier TEA Switzerland.
