Environmental and security fears fail to dent business travel – 6 Feb 2007

Despite security delays and environmental issues there has been no slowdown in business travel, according to a poll.

Three out of four business travellers reported they travelled at least as much in 2006 as the previous year and 44% travelled more, according to the annual Barclaycard Business Travel Survey.

However, the proportion recording an increase in travel was marginally down on 2005, from 45%.

One in five travelled more than 500 miles per week and 16% travelled up to 1,000. Almost four out five said travelling had benefited their business, with just 3% saying it had made no difference.

Barclaycard commercial cards director Denise Leleux said: “The vast majority of business people accept that, without travelling, they could not produce the same results.”

Yet most travel was within the UK and, despite the booming economies of China and India, these destinations were most-frequently visited by a smaller proportion of business travellers last year than in 2005.

The survey of 4,000 business travellers was conducted in December. The full report will not be available until April.
