Study to probe on-line options

ANEW on-line booking option is planned to give visitors to Birmingham International Airport’s Web site the opportunity to buy flights.

Director of business development Peter Vella said the airport is looking at various revenue-earning enhancements.

He could not say when the booking option will come on-line but revealed talks with the site’s managers were under way.

Vella said the site at www.bhx.co.uk gets around 100,000 hits a month with an average stay of 9mins.

Other opportunities being investigated for their revenue-earning potential include on-line shopping under a partnership with the airport’s retailers.

A proposal for the Internet initiatives will go before the BIA board later this year for inclusion in future budgets.

BIA’s move into on-line bookings puts additional pressure on agents as it is another direct-sell option for passengers. Other UK airports are also considering Internet sales on their Web sites.
