BAA has appointed Stephen Baxter to the newly created position of first chief operating officer.

The airport operator also announced the appointment of Sir Nigel Rudd as non-executive Chairman and Lord Stevens as a non-executive director of the board.

Formerly the divisional managing director for BAA Scotland, Baxter will assume direct responsibility of BAA’s seven airports when he takes up the new post on September 3. He will remain chairman of BAA Scotland.

BAA chief executive Stephen Nelson said: “The appointment of Stephen Baxter to this important new role signals BAA’s commitment to putting passengers’ interests first and to bringing about substantial improvements to our operational performance.

“Stephen’s track record in Scotland is impressive and he has managed three airports which consistently work well for passengers.”

Elsewhere, divisional director for southeast airports Terry Morgan takes up a new role as airport services director. Director of safety, security and services Donal Dowds is leaving the company.
