UK hotel prices increase by 17%

Hotel rates in the UK increased by 17% in the second quarter of this year making it the most expensive country in Europe.

Hotel rooms are now on average £110 a night, and £119 per night in London, a rise of 19% compared with last year, according to the Hotels.com hotel price index.

It is now the fourth most expensive city in the world. Europe as whole saw year on year rates increase by 5.2%.

Major US cities, excluding New York, saw a drop of 0.5% in average prices to £71 per night – this made the US 20% cheaper on average than Europe during this period.

Moscow was the most expensive city at £192 per room per night and Cape Town was the cheapest on average at £55 per night.

Hotels.com marketing director Patrik Oqvist said: “While prices across Europe are up, many major global cities have actually experienced a price drop since last year, making some destinations great value for travellers.”
