New US routes for Zoom

Zoom Airlines will add two US destinations to its network from Gatwick next summer.

The Canadian carrier is in negotiations with local tourism authorities in two US destinations about start-up services from next May or June.

The routes will predominantly serve leisure traffic, meaning Charleston, South Carolina or Savannah, Georgia could be in the frame.

Zoom UK managing director Jonathan Hinkles said: “Neither of the two destinations is served direct from London at the moment.”

Zoom has pioneered low-fare long-haul flights and established a UK subsidiary this year, launching services to New York and Bermuda from Gatwick  in June.

The airline has flown between the UK and Canada since 2002 and claims 10% of the market on the route.

Zoom excludes business class. “We fit 270 seats in a Boeing 767 when the average on a carrier with business class is about 200,” said Hinkles.
