Snow shuts Athens airport

Flights to and from Athens have been cancelled or will suffer severe delays today following heavy snow across Greece.

The centre of Athens was reported to be covered by up to 15 centimetres of snow, with most public transport shut down. Temperatures in northern Greece are forecast to fall to minus 15 degrees Celsius today. About 200 villages are reported to be cut off.

British Airways cancelled both its early morning and lunchtime departures from Heathrow to Athens today, although the 18.05 service remains scheduled to go ahead.

The 1655 departure from Athens has also been cancelled and this morning’s 1100 departure is now expected into Heathrow after 1800.
