Bomb blasts hit Istanbul

At least 16 people have been killed and 150 injured in what officials have called a “terrorist attack” in a packed pedestrian square in Istanbul.

Two explosions detonated within minutes of each other and a few metres apart in the busy Gungoren residential area last night. Security services said that Kurdish rebels were likely to be behind the attack.

The first blast happened around 10pm near a telephone booth outside a bank. As crowds gathered in the area, the second one went off killing and injuring more people.

TV footage has shown people lying in the street and being carried to ambulances in blankets.

The Foreign Office is awaiting further details and may issue advice to tourists later today.
