First Choice plans to help out with design of hotels in resort

FIRST Choice is taking greater control of its product by helping to design new hotels in resort.

The operator is looking for new-build projects, negotiating long-term contracts with the owners and then working closely in the development of the hotel.

Speaking at the launch of the operator’s 2000/2001 Wintersun and Leisurely Days brochures, head of product marketing Kyle Haughton said the move will ensure properties are geared for the UK market.

“We already have a property in Tenerife that is due for completion in December and are on the lookout for more opportunities,” he said. “We are beginning to influence the design and layout of the hotel. Hoteliers are aware we know our customers better than they do and are seeking our input.”

In addition to controlling product, the move will also help alleviate the capacity squeeze in the Canaries.

“Contracting is getting difficult,” said Haughton.

First Choice has reintroduced Egypt to the winter programme having dropped the destination after the Luxor massacre in 1997.

It is featuring two charters from Gatwick and Manchester.

Haughton said the operator is offering 50% of its original programme.

Also featuring in the winter brochure are cruises on the Ausonia which makes its debut with First Choice next summer.

Following the trend set for summer 2000, the Crawley-based operator is introducing more 10 and 11-night holidays for winter.

“Many people take a second holiday in winter but 14 days is too long and seven not quite long enough,” said Haughton. “This solves that problem.”

Haughton predicted the winter market would increase by around 3% in 2000/ 2001 but declined to reveal growth plans.

As the company is in a closed period, he also refused to divulge any price increases.
