Travel fraud group to relaunch as PROFiT

The group of industry figures working to stamp out fraud in the travel industry is to re-name itself PROFiT.

Chaired by Teletext head of compliance Barry Gooch, the group is part of the Metropolitan Police’s Operation Sterling which works to combat fraud across various industries.

PROFit (Prevention of Fraud in the Travel Industry) has 14 organisations as members, including ABTA, Hays Travel Group. British Airways and the Global Travel Group. It will officially launch in February at Scotland Yard.

In the first of at least four guidance documents being worked on, ABTA head of finance Mike Monk has put together a best practice guide on credit card fraud.

The guide will be available on the ABTA website in the coming weeks, and on www.profit.uk.com when it goes live later this year. Other documents will outline how to vet new staff and make sure customers’ data is secure.

Gooch said: “We want to create a sustainable unit where organisations work together to help eliminate fraud in travel.”
