Sweden and Switzerland have been added to a list of countries where British travellers attending Christmas markets have been urged to remain vigilant this winter.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office added the two countries in updated travel advice to a list which already includes Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany and Italy.
In each case the FCO says: “There may be increased security in place over the Christmas and new year period, including at Christmas markets and other major events that might attract large crowds.
“You should be vigilant and follow the advice of local authorities.”
The caution follows the US State Department warning of a heightened risk of terrorist attacks across Europe over the festive period.
A Christmas market in Berlin was targeted by terrorists last year, plus a nightclub in Istanbul on new year’s eve.
