When to go: December-April is the dry season but prices are highest at this time.

Getting around: Costa Rica has very little in terms of railways but the main roads are good and hire cars plentiful.
Cost of one day’s rafting: $70-$90, depending on grade of river.
Cost of a meal: $7 and upwards for a decent meal. A glass of beer starts at around $1, spirits for not much more.
Travel essentials: sunblock rated SPF20 or above. Insect repellent.
Vaccinations: none required although tetanus, hepatitis, cholera and malaria precautions are recommended, especially if you plan to be active in jungle or rainforest.
