Marella Cruises has named two godmothers of its new ship Marella Explorer due to launch next month.
Sue Stewart, the line’s hotel operations manager, and Tui agent Mandy Galloway were informed of the decision last week and will attend the vessel’s launch in Palma, Mallorca, on May 17.
Key crew members and workers within Tui have historically been chosen as the ship’s godmothers in recognition for their work.
Stewart said it was “a complete surprise” to be named godmother after 14 years working for Tui in roles both onboard and now at the Wigmore House head office in Luton.
Galloway received a call from Tui UK’s cruise and distribution Helen Caron telling her of the news.
Speaking from the Tui shop in Edinburgh’s Gyle shopping centre, she said: “[Being named godmother] is the ultimate reward for all the hard work I have put in.
“Cruise has been a big part of 35 years in travel, this is going to be my career highlight.”
Galloway, who is nicknamed “Marella Mandy” by colleagues due to her love of the line, sold a Marella cruise to 80 people in January and February alone this year.
Chris Hackney, Marella Cruises’ managing director, said Stewart and Galloway were “two outstanding employees”.
He said: “Both Sue and Mandy have contributed greatly to TUI and significantly our cruise business over the years.
“Their drive and passion is invaluable and we couldn’t be more pleased to have them as the godmothers of our newest ship.”
