British tourists appear in Crete court for dressing as nuns

Tourists have been warned to behave appropriately on holiday after a group of British tourists appeared in a Crete court after dressing up as nuns on a night out.

The 17 men, who were also wearing ladies’ underwear, spent a night in a prison cell on May 25 after causing offence to the Catholic community. They appeared before a judge, still dressed in their costumes, the following day.

The prosecutor dropped the charges as no one testified against the group, and they were released.

The men, aged 18 to 65 and all from the Bristol area, were on a football tour, and had been out partying in Hania, a lively part of Crete.

According to reports after the hearing, police chief Dimitris Makroyiannis said: “It’s the start of the tourist season and we wanted to send a message that such antics won’t be tolerated.

“They were drunk and provocative and so we pulled them in. We won’t be putting up with this sort of pandemonium any longer.”
