Travel agents are being invited to take part in the review of the Travel Services Apprenticeships by joining People 1st’s Apprenticeship Implementation Group.
The key aims of the group, which is due to have its first meeting on July 31, will be to review the content of the apprenticeship framework to ensure apprentices are equipped to meet travel industry needs.
The group will also discuss how the apprenticeships will be delivered, marketed, promoted and progressed.
Some invitations to join the group went out this week, but more participants are required, said People 1st apprenticeship manager Preetkiran Sumal.
“Anyone who wants to be involved should contact us. We want this to be industry led, and with involvement from the full range of people in the industry – a real mix,” she said.
The news comes as the Apprenticeships, Skills, Children and Learning Bill 2008/09 is working its way through the House of Lords. Among its provisions is the setting up of an independent qualifications and assessment regulator, which, it is hoped, will give a much-needed boost to the standing of apprenticeships and Diplomas.
“The Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families announced in September 2007 the intention to legislate to establish an independent regulator of qualifications and assessment, reporting to Parliament to improve public confidence in standards,” explained People 1st Diploma in Travel and Tourism project lead People 1st John Humphreys.
“The regulator, Ofqual, was established in interim form in April 2008, and took on the regulatory functions of the Qualifications Authority (QCA). The Bill will provide for the set-up of Ofqual on a formal basis, equipping it with new powers.
“The QCA will evolve into the Qualifications and Curriculum Development Agency, which will be responsible for developing and advising ministers on the curriculum and related qualifications, including the new Diploma in Travel and Tourism for 14 to 19-year-olds, which will be first taught in England in September 2010.”
