ABTA launches responsible hotels and resorts directory

ABTA is launching a directory of environmentally responsible hotels and resorts to help holidaymakers make informed choices.

The directory uses the Travelife Sustainability System, which was developed by the Federation of Tour Operators, and is backed by leading environmentalist and Forum for the Future founder Jonathon Porritt.

The Travelife Collection directory is accessible online and gives holidaymakers the chance to choose hotels that have been independently audited and meet strict criteria of sustainability and environmental responsibility.

The Travelife Sustainability System awards hotels with a gold, silver or bronze Travelife award. Tour operators supporting the scheme promote the achievements of the properties through their brochures and websites, allowing the customer to factor it into their travel plans.

Porritt said: “Increasingly, holidaymakers are seeking some reliable assurance to confirm that we are choosing truly responsible places to stay. That is the aim of this directory, and I’ve not doubt there are more and more people who will be keen to take advantage of it.”

ABTA chief executive Mark Tanzer added: “Holidaymakers today often care about the impact their travel has on climate change and, increasingly, many are starting to care about what happens when they arrive too.

“Travel has the potential to create many benefits for destinations when correctly managed, but unless we act responsibly, it can have damaging and long-lasting effects on communities and local economies.”
