Sandals to build Caribbean’s first over-water rooms

Construction of the Caribbean’s first over-the-water rooms will start at the beginning of next year at Sandals Grande St Lucian hotel.

Sandals chief executive Adam Stewart said the 26 rooms will be built off a single walkway stretching more than 200ft in to the sea.

The properties are expected to take 10 months to build, and come following three years of negotiation with government planning authorities.

Stewart said: “We have been able to prove it is less harmful for the environment to build over the water than it is on land.

“The idea of the rooms is not to have them on top of one another. They are all separate, and their decks are completely private.”

He said the rooms should prove popular with honeymooning couples, and will go on sale three months before their completion next year.

Meanwhile, Stewart said the Sandals Weddings by Martha Stewart packages went on sale last week with five different packages, four of which are bespoke.

The weddings are available for guests staying in Sandals and Beaches properties from January onwards.

Meanwhile, Stewart is today launching an adventure tour company called Island Routes, which will be available to book across the Caribbean, not just to Sandals guests, and which will be fully commissionable.
