A submerged jumbo jet is to be the centrepiece of what is claimed will be the world’s largest underwater theme park off the coast of Bahrain.
The 70-metre long decommissioned Boeing 747 is due to be delivered before the summer with more items set to join the aircraft 20 metres from the surface of the sea off the north coast of the mainland.
Covering an area of over 100,000 square metres, the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority revealed that the dive site will also include a replica of a traditional Bahraini pearl merchant’s house, artificial coral reefs and other sculptures fabricated from eco-friendly material.
The authority said: “Fully decontaminated from toxic substances, every effort has been taken to limit the project’s environmental footprint and to ensure delivery in the most environmentally sound manner.
“Governed under the strictest regional and international waste management guidelines, the project is designed to have a positive environmental impact, creating refuge for local marine life and to stimulate coral growth.”
