A total of 6,000 people have signed up to the Travel Foundation’s Make Travel Greener campaign launched in conjunction with Travel Weekly in April this year.
The campaign, which is based on an online quiz devised to test people’s knowledge on responsible travel issues, has attracted support from Thomas Cook, The Co-operative Travel Group and TUI Travel.
TTA Worldchoice has made a specially-branded version of the quiz available to its members, while Advantage Travel Centres will be encouraging delegates to complete the quiz at its conference in Lucerne, Switzerland in May next year.
Advantage sales and marketing director Colin O’Neil said: ”We’ll be hosting a taster version of the quiz at our conference this year and injecting a bit of fun into it with prizes for the highest scores.
“The United Nations Climate Change conference in Copenhagen means the environment is top of the news agenda right now and it simply can’t be ignored. We want all our members to find out how they can understand more about responsible travel issues and take action.”
The Travel Foundation is urging more companies and individuals to get involved as it continues the initiative in 2010. Developments for the quiz next year will include the launch of a cruise module, created in partnership with the Association of Cruise Experts.
There will also be an updated version of the quiz to include more questions on climate change and a consumer version made available next year.
Travel Foundation chief executive Sue Hurdle said: “We’ve made huge strides this year with the Make Travel Greener Campaign, which is designed to be fun and informative. It’s the biggest trade educational campaign we’ve undertaken, and it’s great that so many organisations have got behind it.
“But there’s more to be done so we’ll be stepping up our campaign next year. For those people who are not sure how to get started on sustainability, the quiz is a great entry point: it provides ideas on some of the areas to think about first. The quiz only takes about 25 minutes, so it can be done in a tea break.
