Eurostar refutes Eurotunnel safety claims

Eurostar has refuted claims by Eurotunnel that it ignored safety rules when evacuating passengers from broken down trains last weekend.

The channel tunnel operator said safety was compromised as the evacuation took too long because passengers were able to take their bags with them.

Eurotunnel issued a bulletin to shareholders on Christmas Day claiming it had been “unfairly criticised for not having reacted correctly” after the train breakdowns.

However, Eurostar said an independent review “will establish the truth once and for all.”

In a statement Eurostar added: “Whilst the circumstances in the trained delayed in the tunnel were obviously uncomfortable and distressing passengers’ safety was not compromised at any time.”

The train breakdowns were caused by condensation entering the high-speed trains’ electrical systems.
