Canaries and Spain top searches over Christmas period

Traditional holiday favourites, the Canaries and mainland Spain, are topping the destinations most searched for online according to Travelsupermarket.com.

With Britain still enduring icy weather, the website reported a 15% increase in travel searches in the three days after Christmas and 65% up in the three days before Christmas when many Brits were snowed in.

Egypt came in third in the most popular destinations followed by the US, the Caribbean, Greece, Turkey, Thailand, Cyprus and Mexico making up the top 10.

Travelsupermarket.com did not release details of actual sales and most traditional retailers expect the busy booking period to follow the pattern of recent years and start in earnest in two weeks.

Despite the search results Travelsupermarket.com said it expected domestic and non-eurozone holidays to remain popular as holidaymakers seek value for money and singled out Dubai for having some very good deals.
