Spa review: Casanova Hotel, Barcelona

Massage tables sit under a canvas-draped pavilion, and the sound of spa music fills the air. Where am I? I bet your first guess wasn’t the centre of Barcelona.

That’s fair enough – this Spanish city is well known for its nightlife, its world-class museums and galleries and its convenient city beach, but not as the epicentre of the spa scene.

Here’s where Casanova comes in. A member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, this property is moments from the Plaza de Catalunya so is perfectly placed for those city centre pursuits. But it also has an innovative, well-designed spa on hand for clients looking for relaxation.

The spa

Design: The Stone Spa has five indoor treatment rooms that are small but not cramped. In the summer months, clients can choose to have their massages in a pavilion set within the contained zen garden in the courtyard of the hotel.

The high walls prevent the sounds of the city from intruding, while the subdued lighting, and natural and neutral materials combine to create a restful atmosphere.

Treatments: All five senses are stimulated by massage, aromatherapy, chromotherapy (colour and light), music and free biscotti-like snacks. Massages, aromatherapy, body scrubs, facials and other treatments incorporate stones and natural products, including chocolate, gold and caviar.

The Jacuzzis in two of the cabins mean water treatments can be combined with other therapies – I had a ‘Vulcan’ shoulder massage in the hot tub followed by an aromatherapy massage. Treatments start from €20.

The hotel

This Rafael hotel was converted from an 18th-century limestone residence, but is firmly modern inside. The contemporary furniture and striking lighting create a real sense of drama.

Rooms: There are 124 rooms:  standard, deluxe, superior and junior suites. The white walls and glass-framed bathrooms set off the rich, dark-coloured furniture.

Dining: The trendy lobby bar is a haunt for locals and tourists. It is overlooked by the Mexiterranee restaurant, which offers a fusion of Mediterranean and Mexican flavours.

Extras: Casanova also offers a Beach Club with sauna, swimming pool, sun beds, a Mediterranean restaurant, cocktail bar and private parking. There is also an array of excursions, including helicopter tours, day trips on a Harley-Davidson to the wine country or yacht charters.

Those who want to stay in town can join a local chef on a shopping tour of La Boqueria, the public market, followed by a cooking class.

Book it: Cresta Holidays offers two nights at Casanova from £275. bctagent.co.uk, 0844 800 7019
