Tourists warned as 21 killed in Bangkok

A weekend of violent clashes between political protesters and armed forces in Bangkok has left 21 people dead and 870 people injured.

Trouble broke out on Saturday when soldiers in armoured vehicles attempted to break up a gathering of thousands of Red Shirts who support the exiled prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra who was driven from power in a military coup.

Seventeen protesters and four soldiers were killed in the ensuing fighting.

Protesters have since been parading coffins through the Thai capital, and the Red Shirts now control a number of important intersections in the city.

The Thai government has declared a state of emergency in Bangkok.

Although trains are running and shops opened again today, the Foreign Office is continuing to warn Brits to exercise extreme caution throughout the country.

It said travellers in Thailand should remain inside should further violence break out and monitor the situation closely online.
