Police investigating the murder of a woman on honeymoon in Cape Town have arrested a man understood to be the taxi driver who was driving the car.
Anni Dewani and her husband were hijacked by armed men on their way back from a restaurant outside Cape Town. They had asked the driver to take a detour so they could see a township at night.
Dewani’s body was discovered in the taxi seven hours after the kidnapping.
The driver was arrested on Saturday in a raid in which police are reported to have found a gun that may be linked to the killing.
According to reports, police believe an organised crime gang may be behind the killing. They are hunting suspects who are known to target tourists staying at Cape Town’s five star hotels.
A source told the Sunday Times: “We are looking at a syndicate targeting and setting up tourists, and this involves some very serious operators.”
