Autumn bank holiday plan to aid domestic tourism

Proposals are to be put forward to switch the May Day bank holiday to October in an effort to support the domestic tourism industry.

The idea for an autumn bank holiday is to be suggested as part of a radical review of UK tourism strategy, according to weekend reports.

The autumn bank holiday could fall on the first Monday of the school autumn half term and could be called UK Day.

Another suggestion is that a Trafalgar Day could be created instead of May Day to mark the anniversary of Britain’s seas victory on October 21, 1805.

The idea is to stretch the peak holiday season and create a break between summer and Christmas.

Tourism minister John Penrose, who is due to start a full public consultation, told The Sun:  “An autumn bank holiday would not only help the industry but give us all a new focus for celebrating the best of what Britain does.

“But before we take this further, it’s vital everyone has a chance to consider it properly.”
