Ryanair has offloaded a group of 100 students due to fly from Lanzarote to Brussels in a row over luggage fees.
Lanzarote police required all 166 passengers on board to be offloaded on Saturday and each passenger to be identified.
“Following further disruptive behaviour, the police required for security reasons that this enitre group be refused travel,” Ryanair said.
The airline said the group had become disruptive and refused to comply with crew instructions after a number of passengers were required to pay a gate bag fee for outsized luggage.
Some of the students from the University of Brussels were later able to find alternative flights, but about 70 were still stuck on Lanzarote last night (Sunday).
“Ryanair apologises sincerely to the 66 remaining passengers who suffered a three hour delay while Ryanair and the local police were dealing with this disruptive group,” the airline said.
“Ryanair’s handling agent in Lanzarote will be re-accommodating some of this group on later flights to Charleroi but any individuals who engaged in disruptive behaviour or refused to follow crew instructions will not be allowed to fly.”
