Cabin crew strike hits Aer Lingus figures

Industrial action at Aer Lingus has been blamed on a traffic slump at the airline last month.

Passenger numbers were down by 17% year on year to 552,000 as capacity dropped by more than 14% due to the dispute with cabin crew as well as planned schedule cuts at Belfast, Gatwick and Cork.

The overall load fact was down by 3.6 points to 63.8%. The short haul load factor was down by 4.8 points to 62.8%, with capacity decreasing by 15.2% as a result of the industrial dispute with the IMPACT union.

The long haul load factor was down 1.3 points to 65.7%, with capacity decreasing by 14.2% as a result of the industrial action, planned year-on-year reductions at Shannon and bad weather-related disruption.

The number of short haul passengers was down by 17.1% to 504,000 in the month, while long haul passengers dropped by 15.8% to 48,000.

“As a result of flight cancellations in January 2011 passengers carried were 4% below the level of booked passengers,” the Irish airline said.
