Disney’s Fantasyland to double in size

Walt Disney World’s Fantasyland is to double in size in the largest expansion in the history of the Florida park’s Magic Kingdom.

New attractions will include a Little Mermaid ride, a Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, a Fairytale Hall where kids can meet Disney princesses, two Dumbo carousels and a Goofy rollercoaster.

Al Weiss, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts’ president of worldwide operations, said Fantasyland was a focal point of the Magic Kingdom in Florida, adding: “Fantasyland is a key driver of guests’ experiences in the park. If they have a good time there, they have a good time everywhere.”

The new attractions will open in phases starting in late 2012. No date has been set for the work to be completed.

A new attraction already open is a show called The Magic, Memories and You! It projects lights and images of that day’s visitors on to Cinderella’s Castle. The 10-minute show is displayed up to twice a day.

In Animal Kingdom, a new Wild Africa Trek allows visitors to strap on harnesses to get close to hippos and walk on two rickety-rope bridges over crocodiles.
