Belgian Travel Service sees demand for self-drive increase

Belgian Travel Service has said that self-drive packages to Belgium are becoming increasingly popular as visitors seek independence and flexibility.

The operator, launching its 2000 brochure, said the number of self-drive packages has increased from 30% to 40% in the past year, reflecting a demand for more tailor-made holidays.

Product manager Jackie Osborne said motorists are also becoming more confident about driving overseas.

“It gives them more flexibility to explore the surrounding area and represents value for money,” she added.

Self-drive packages start at £69 for two nights at a one-star plus hotel including Eurotunnel or ferry crossing.

The operator, part of the Bridge Travel Group, also reported customers trading up to a higher standard of hotel as the price gap narrows between one and five-star hotels.

It is is again encouraging more week-day visitors to the major cities – with discounts available on travel between Monday and Thursday – while early morning departures on Eurostar are being promoted with a £10 saving on services before 7am.

Capacity on the later trains is tight, said Osborne.

New to the programme are themed breaks including trips to the Battlefield at Ypres – scene of a World War Iconflict – and to Waterloo.

Beer and chocolate breaks are also featured and the operator is also highlighting its Valentines and Mother’s Day packages.

Osborne said they are looking to grow the 35,000 passenger heads in 1999 by 5%.
