Universal is to use high-definition 3D media four times the resolution used in cinemas as it revamps its Spiderman ride in Orlando and introduces new rides based around the films Transformers and Despicable Me in Hollywood and Orlando respectively.
Transformers director Michael Bay has created an original story for the new ride at Universal Studios Hollywood, which will also feature voiceovers from actors who appear in the film franchise.
Universal president of creative Mark Woodbury told a Pow Wow press conference that the Transformers ride would be a roaming flight simulator housed in a 60-foot-high “media silo”.
“This will be as groundbreaking and earth shaking as you can imagine,” he said.
Both the Transformers and Despicable Me rides are scheduled to open in 2012, though exact dates haven’t been announced.
The Despicable Me ride will combine a 3D attraction with an interactive dance experience.
Universal Orlando Resort vice president for destination sales Dennis Quinn said the opening of the new attraction at Universal Studios would serve to remind visitors of the two-park offering after the opening of the WIzarding World of Harry Potter last year focused attention on the Islands of Adventure park.
