Passengers flying to and from Greece today have been warned to expect delays of up to eight hours following strike action by air traffic controllers.
Many flights were delayed or cancelled after air traffic controllers walked out for several hours yesterday afternoon as part of wider industrial action in protest against the Greek government’s fresh round of austerity cuts.
Further disruption is expected today with Eurocontrol warning of “severe staffing issues” at air traffic control centres in Greece.
The European air traffic control organisation forecast that “delays will grow even further from the early morning and will possibly exceed 8 hours for many flights in the afternoon.”
Airlines have been “strongly recommended” to avoid Greek airspace if possible.
