Scotland has joined Wales in removing Portugal from its safe list of countries exempt from quarantine measures, in contrast to the UK government which confirmed on Thursday evening that there would be no changes “today” for travellers from England.
French Polynesia has also been removed from the Scottish list, while Gibraltar, which has been removed from the Welsh list, remains under close observation.
On Thursday evening, the Welsh government confirmed it was removing a further five Greek islands from its list, having already added Zante. Scotland had already imposed 14-day quarantine requirements for the whole of Greece, but it remains on the UK government’s list of exemptions.
The Welsh government confirmed its changes would apply from 4am on Friday. However, the Scottish changes will not be implemented until 4am on Saturday.
Scottish justice secretary Humza Yousaf tweeted: “If arriving into Scotland from Portugal or French Polynesia from 4am Sat (5th Sept) you’ll have to self-isolate for 14 days.
“Gibraltar high up our watch list of countries we are monitoring closely.
“This week’s data shows increase in test positivity & cases per 100k in Portugal.”
