Greek air traffic strike ‘trimmed back’ to 12 hours

Air passengers to and from Greece may escape extended travel chaos as workers start a two-day general strike over the country’s severe austerity measures.

A planned 48-hour walk-out by air traffic controllers in line with other public service workers has been reduced to 12 hours, according to easyJet.

The budget carrier said it had been informed by Greek authorities that the previous 48 hour strike has now been trimmed back.

“The strike will now be from midnight local (Greek time) to midday Wednesday,” the airline said.  “We would like to apologise for any inconvenience this has caused, however this is a situation that easyJet has no control over.

”We can now advise that all easyJet flights will operate on Wednesday 19th and Thursday 20th October. Some passengers on flights from Manchester and London Gatwick were informed of re-times.”

But mass action by other workers is expected to see most public services halted, and shops and offices shut as small business owners join the latest in a string of strikes in protest over government cuts for the first time.

Tour operator and airline Thomas Cook said yesterday on Twitter that none of its flights would be affected by the latest industrial action in Greece.
